Text and Photos by Rudolf Fleck, AT
Recently, one very special friend of K2 sat down to write about his experiences with us. Meet Rudolf Fleck, an incredible macro photographer from Austria who just crossed an amazing milestone of 93 dives here at K2 Lembeh!
Here is Rudolf’s story, in his own words:
From the Sky to the Sea
Hello, fellow ocean lovers! My name is Rudolf Fleck. Back home in Austria, I live in a quiet, charming little town called Sierning and work as a flight engineer. But for the last 35 years, my true passion has been the ocean.
With more than 600 dives under my belt, my absolute favorite hobby is underwater macro photography. After doing extensive research online to find the perfect place to pursue this, I chose K2 Lembeh because the warm descriptions and photos matched exactly what I was searching for.

Nature never stops surprising me. This juvenile filefish was changing colour as it moved between different backgrounds, making it both fascinating and challenging to photograph. Moments like this are why I keep returning to Lembeh.
Little did I know, I wasn't just booking a dive trip—I was finding a second home. I enjoyed the accommodation, the staff, and the atmosphere so much that I have now returned to K2 three times, completing a grand total of 93 dives. There are diving destinations, and then there is Lembeh Strait. For those who find their joy in the small, the strange, and the downright spectacular, this corner of the world is nothing short of paradise. But what truly makes it paradise for me is the K2 team.

After three visits and 93 dives, this villa has become much more than just a place to sleep. In the night, with a beer in my hand, I always enjoy the beautiful night sky. Waking up here each morning and relaxing here after diving truly makes it feel like my second home.
A Lesson in Underwater Karma
Even after hundreds of dives, the ocean—and your friends—always find a way to keep you humble. Right here in K2 Lembeh, one of my funniest underwater moments unfolded. I geared up, splashed into the water, dropped down... and realized I had completely forgotten to put my camera into its underwater housing!
What made it truly hilarious was that the exact same thing had happened to a Dutch dive buddy of mine on a previous trip right here at K2. I had teased him endlessly about it at the time. Karma clearly has a fantastic sense of humor, and I think we're completely even now!

One of the reasons I love diving in Lembeh is finding subjects like these beautiful harlequin shrimp. They may be small, but their colours and patterns are simply incredible. Seeing a pair together always makes the dive even more special.
The Magic Behind the Lens: Fiki and the Crew
The main reason I keep coming back to K2 is the deep bond I've formed with the people here. A guide named Fiki has been by my side for almost all of my 93 dives, and he is a massive reason K2 feels like home. Every single excursion with him is memorable. Fiki has an absolute superpower; he can spot tiny creatures that I can barely see even after looking three or four times!

Beyond the dive boat, the rest of the K2 team makes every day feel like a reunion. Coming back from a long day of shooting to fantastic food and sharing stories with a team that feels like family—all while looking out at that breathtaking view from the terrace—is something I deeply appreciate.

It's not only the underwater world that makes K2 special. Walking through these beautiful gardens each day adds to the peaceful atmosphere and reminds me that this is a place where it's easy to slow down and simply enjoy life.
Unforgettable Memories
After 93 dives at K2 Lembeh, I can honestly say the experience has been nothing short of unforgettable. A huge thank you to my friends at K2 for making every single visit feel so incredibly special.
I’m already looking forward to dive number 94—and I promise I'll double-check my camera housing next time!

Returning to the resort after a night dive and seeing K2 glowing on the hillside is always a wonderful sight. It's the perfect ending to another memorable day beneath the surface.
From Guests to Family: A Special Story from Our Friend, Rudolf
At K2 Lembeh, we always say that we aren't just in the business of diving—we are in the business of building a family. While people might first come to us for the ocean, they return because of the connections made on our boats, around our dining table, and on our terrace. Over the years, so many of our guests have truly become our lifelong friends.
Are you ready to discover the magic of Lembeh for yourself? Whether it's your 1st dive or your 94rd, the critters are waiting!
